Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, said many Japanese companies are seeking foreign workers, especially from Indonesia. According to him, one of the reasons Indonesian workers are popular in Japan is that they are known for their hard work.
"Indonesian skilled workers are known for being hardworking and highly respectful of Japanese regulations," he said on Tuesday (September 30, 2025). Therefore, he continued, Japanese companies are flocking to recruit Indonesian workers.
Furthermore, Japanese society is said to be growing accustomed to Indonesian workers, the majority of whom are Muslim. Ambassador Masaki stated that the local community also respects the Indonesian workers' religion by providing halal restaurants.
"Of course, most of you have different religions, so we have to respect that," he said. Masaki said that Japanese society is gradually adapting by providing halal food boutiques.
Indonesian workers in Japan work in the fields of hospital care, fisheries, and hospitality. However, Masaki confirmed that Japan is beginning to expand employment opportunities for foreign workers.
These include transportation, agriculture, and other sectors. "So, you have many opportunities to work in our country," he said.
Masaki stated that the Japanese government and companies hope that skilled Indonesian workers can help the community in their homeland. For example, workers whose contracts have ended can return to Indonesia and implement their experiences in Japan.
"They can contribute to Indonesia's development, and Japanese companies can collaborate with them," he said. Therefore, these migrant workers not only help Japan but also their own country.
According to Japanese government data, there are currently 150,000 Indonesian workers in Japan. This is a significant number, similar to Bangladesh and India.
